The complete Porsche 911 pre-purchase inspection checklist

Published July 11, 2026 · 9 min read

A Porsche 911 PPI is the highest-leverage $150–400 you'll spend in the entire buying process. This is the full checklist, in order — every stage from the first message you send the seller to the moment you sign the title — tuned for the SC, 3.2 Carrera, and 996 you're actually shopping.

01 · Before you contact the seller

Know your number

  • All-in budget set, including PPI, reserve, and insurance — not just purchase price
  • Model and generation decided (SC / 3.2 Carrera / 996), with a clear reason why
  • Coupe vs. cabriolet, manual vs. Tiptronic preferences locked in before you browse

Research the listing

  • Comparable sold prices checked for the same model/year/mileage range
  • VIN requested and ready to run through CarFax/AutoCheck
  • Photos examined for panel-gap consistency and paint match across body panels

First contact

  • Service records requested — IMS documentation (996) or engine-out history (SC/3.2)
  • Cold-start video requested if you can't view first thing in the morning
  • Willingness to accommodate a PPI confirmed before you invest more time

02 · The walk-around

In person, with a flashlight. Take your time.

Exterior & body

  • Panel gaps even, paint color consistent across every panel
  • No rust in wheel wells, rocker panels, or torsion tube areas
  • Undercarriage inspected for fresh undercoating hiding damage
  • Tire brand and DOT date code checked against claimed usage
  • Headlight/taillight lenses checked — cloudy is cosmetic, cracked is not

Interior

  • Seat bolster and pedal wear roughly matches claimed mileage
  • Every button, window, and seat adjustment tested
  • No musty smell or water staining on carpet
  • Cabriolet/targa — top seal condition checked
  • Dash warning lights illuminate at startup, then clear properly

03 · Under the hood & test drive

Engine bay

  • No oil wetness or residue around engine seals
  • Coolant clean — no milkiness or oil contamination (996)
  • Hoses and clamps checked for cracking, brittleness, or recent replacement

Cold start

  • Listen for excessive rattling in the first few seconds
  • No unusual smoke on startup

Test drive

  • Clutch engagement point consistent, not grabby or slipping
  • No clunks over bumps
  • Steering direct, no play or wandering
  • No warning lights once the car is running and warm
  • IMS bearing status asked directly, documentation requested (996)

04 · The PPI & final offer

Scheduling the PPI

  • Porsche-specialist independent shop, not a general mechanic
  • Shop located near the car, not near you, if buying remotely
  • Compression / leak-down test included
  • Written report requested before any money changes hands

After the PPI

  • Every finding totaled into one number before you make an offer
  • Fair offer calculated against real comparable sales, not asking price
  • Offer stated once, with reasoning — no floating range

Before you sign

  • Clean title confirmed, no salvage or rebuilt history
  • All paperwork and service records collected from the seller
  • Insurance quote and coverage confirmed before pickup
