What the IMS bearing actually is

The intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing supports a shaft inside the engine that keeps the camshafts timed correctly relative to the crankshaft. On a small percentage of early water-cooled 911s this bearing can fail, and because of where it sits, a failure can lead to serious internal engine damage — not just a simple part swap. This one issue is why the 996 built a reputation for risk, and also why it's priced so far below every other 911 generation.

The risk is real, but it's well understood and completely solvable. The aftermarket LN Engineering IMS Solution is a permanent fix, typically done alongside a clutch job since both require similar disassembly. A car with this already done and documented isn't a risky 996 — it's arguably a safer bet than a brand-new car with no track record at all.

Does every 996 need this fix?

No — plenty of 996s run their entire life without an IMS failure. But since there's no reliable way to predict which engines are at risk without inspection, treating it as "needs addressing" rather than "hope for the best" is the safer approach.

How do I know if it's already been done?

Ask the seller directly and request documentation — an invoice from a specialist shop, ideally naming the LN Engineering solution specifically. If they don't know what you're asking, that's meaningful information on its own.

What if it hasn't been done — should I walk?

Not necessarily. Budget the retrofit cost into your offer and get it done proactively once you own the car, ideally alongside a clutch job. Plenty of great 996 purchases start with an undocumented car and a clear plan.

Can a PPI actually detect an IMS problem before failure?

A thorough PPI can check for early warning signs — oil analysis for metal content, for instance — but can't guarantee a bearing's future. This is exactly why the retrofit, not just inspection, is the real solution serious buyers pursue.

Is IMS the only thing to worry about on a 996?

Most talked-about, but not the only one. RMS (rear main seal) leaks, coolant hose age, and AOS (air/oil separator) wear are common, well-understood items a good PPI will also flag.

What a real PPI covers

A pre-purchase inspection is the single highest-leverage $150–400 you'll spend. It's not about trusting the seller — it's about catching what neither of you can see without a lift and specialist eyes.

A good 996 PPI includes: compression / leak-down test, visual inspection for RMS / AOS / coolant leaks, suspension and bushing wear check, brake condition, undercarriage rust inspection, and where possible an oil analysis to check for metal content that could indicate early bearing wear.
